SWCT Curling Talk [December 18th]

The Christmas season is certainly a busy part of the curling season as well!  First, a quick recap of the last couple of weeks, and then find out what's in store for the holidays in Saskatchewan!

Participating teams are Nancy Martin, Jill Shumay, Sherry Just, Trish Paulsen, Amanda Labach, Ros Stewart, Teandra Friesen, and Nicole Beausoleil.  Draws begin Friday at 2:00 pm.  Four teams will qualify for the provincials.

December 19-21, 2013
Confirmed teams are Brett Barber, Penny Barker, Larisa Murray, Mandy Selzer, Lana Vey, Sherrilee Orsted, Lorraine Arguin, Lorraine Schneider, Kim Schneider, Teejay Haichert, and Jana Tisdale.  Draws begin Friday at 4:00 pm.  Four teams will qualify for the provincials.

SWCT Curling Talk [December 4th]

EVENTS FROM THE PAST TWO WEEKS

Boundary Ford Curling Classic
Lloydminster, AB
November 29-December 2, 2013
Participating Sask teams were Brett Barber, Amber Holland, Trish Paulsen, Jill Shumay, Ros Stewart, and Kelly Wood.  Barber, Paulsen, Shumay and Holland qualified for the playoff round.  Congratulation to the Amber Holland team for winning this event! Paulsen eliminated Shumay in the quarter final, advancing to the semi and losing to Alberta’s Jessie Kaufman. Kaufman also defeated Barber in the quarter final and would lose to Holland in the final.  Holland takes home $8000 in prize money; Paulsen wins $3500; and Shumay and Barber each leave with $2250.

Junior Women Q-Spiel #3
Watrous, SK
November 29-December 1, 2013
Qualifying from this event were teams Erickson, Thompson, Orsen and Grywacheski.

Cornerstone Credit Union Ladies Cash Bonspiel
Yorkton, SK
November 29-December 1, 2013
Michelle Englot won this event, taking the final over Kristen Streifel 5-4.  Englot first took on Jana Tisdale in the quarter final, and then took on Penny Barker in the semi.  Also qualifying were Mandy Selzer and Lorraine Schneider.  Selzer defeated Schneider in the quarter final before falling to Streifel in the other semi.

Dominion Curling Club Canadian Championships
Thunder Bay, ON
November 18-23, 2013
Team Heather Burnett had a fantastic showing at the championships! These ladies went undefeated through the round robin play, advancing to the final where they met a difficult Manitoba team and lost their final game.  Congratulations on your silver medal win!


**Congratulations to Team Michelle Englot, who has claimed the SWCT provincial berth!**
   The CTRS provincial berths will be announced once the 2013-2014 CTRS standings are updated.

Anita Ford – many will remember her as the coach and alternate for Sandra Schmirler (Peterson).  Anita has also coached the Michelle Englot team.

Olympic Pre-Trials

November 5-10, 2013
Amber Holland had a difficult run and did not qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Colonial Square Ladies Curling Classic
Nutana Curling Club, Saskatoon, SK
November 15-18, 2013
Participating Sask teams were Barker, Eberle, Englot, Holland, Just, Lawton, Martin, Murray, Paulsen, Selzer, Shumay, Stewart and Vey.  Barker was the sole Sask team to qualify for the playoff round, losing to Michele Jaggi in the quarter final but taking home $3250.  Holland lost a C qualifier game against Team Kim from Korea. Vey met Manitoba’s Team Meakin in another C qualifier, losing 7-5.

SWCT Curling Talk [November 6th]


The long weekend is approaching! Let’s take a quick look back at the last couple of weeks:

Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Women’s Classic
Winnipeg, MB
October 25-28, 2013
Participating Sask teams were Amber Holland, Michelle Englot, and Trish Paulsen. None of our teams qualified for the playoff round, but Holland lost a C qualifier to Crystal Webster.

Shamrock Shotgun
Edmonton, AB
October 25-27, 2013
Team Syngenta (Barber) finished first in her pool and moved on to the quarter final.  She lost to Alberta’s Jessie Kaufman, but took home $800.

The Masters of Curling
Abbotsford, BC
October 30-November 3, 2013
Team Lawton finished the round robin with a record of 3-1, advancing to the playoff round and losing to Jennifer Jones in the quarter final.  Lawton earns $7500 for this event.

Red Deer Curling Classic
Red Deer, AB
November 1-4, 2013
Participating Sask teams were Barber and Paulsen. Paulsen qualified out of the A event, advancing to the quarter final where she lost to Switzerland’s Binia Feltscher.  She earned $2500 at this event.

GoodLife Prince Albert Ladies Cash Spiel
Prince Albert, SK
November 1-3, 2013.
This event ran as a pay-per-win event, as we were unable to meet the 12 team requirement for a CTRS event.  Thank you to Pat Bibby and the Prince Albert curling club for running the event and allowing our ladies teams to enjoy some games together.

-Saskatchewan holds the highest number of national women’s championships, with a total of 12 titles.  Past winners include Joyce McKee, Dorenda Schoenhals, Vera Pezer, Emily Farnham, Marj Mitchell, Sandra Schmirler (Peterson), and Amber Holland.

SWCT Curling Talk [October 23rd]


Hello everyone! Here are some updates on the happenings of the past week.

Medicine Hat Charity Classic
Medicine Hat, AB
October 18-21, 2013
Participating Saskatchewan teams were Brett Barber, Chantelle Eberle, and Kelly Wood.  Eberle was the only team who qualified, taking an A spot and then losing the quarter-final to Alberta’s Casey Scheidegger, 7-0.  Eberle earned $1500 at this event.  Wood finished close, losing a C qualifier to Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura.

Heritage Inn and Suites Moose Jaw Tour Spiel
Moose Jaw, SK
October 18-20, 2013
Qualifying teams were Just and Vey from the A event; Arguin and Englot from the B; and Stewart and Orsted from the C.  Stewart then played Englot in a quarter-final, losing 6-4, while Orsted beat Arguin 8-2 in the other quarter-final.  Vey took on Englot in a semi-final, winning 7-3, while Just took on Orsted, winning 7-5.  In the final, Vey won over Just with a score of 9-5.

Competition Fee including the CCA fee must be paid to the Region Director, or the SCA Office by, November 1, 2013. Points accumulated prior to November 1, 2013 will count only if fees and forms are submitted to the Region Director or the SCA office by November 1, 2013. If registrations are received after November 1, 2013, only points obtained from the date of receipt of registration will be eligible.

SWCT Curling Talk [October 16th]


Hello everyone! Here are some updates on the happenings of the last couple of weeks.

Avonair Cash Spiel
Edmonton, AB
October 4-6, 2013
Saskatchewan team Brett Barber (Team Syngenta) had a good showing, advancing to the playoff round and finding themselves against Grande Prairie’s Delia DeJong in the quarter final.  Barber defeated DeJong handily, 12-1, before advancing to the semi final and losing 8-3 to Holly Whyte of Grande Prairie.  Barber took home $1250 for her efforts.

Prestige Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic
Vernon, BC
October 3-6, 2013
Saskatchewan teams Amber Holland and Stefanie Lawton were present.  Team Holland failed to qualify, but Lawton quickly took the A qualifier and moved on to the playoffs, where she met Allison Pottinger of Minnesota in the quarter final.  Lawton won the match 7-4 and moved on to the semi final, losing to Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott in an extra end.  Lawton pockets $5000 for the event.

Rocktoberfest
Regina Callie Curling Club, Regina, SK
October 11-14, 2013
Qualifying teams for this event were Larisa Murray, Kelly Wood, Chantelle Eberle, Trish Paulsen, Mandy Selzer, Sherry Just, Michelle Englot, and Jessica Hanson.  Hanson, Selzer, Paulsen and Wood did not make it out of the quarter finals.  Englot beat Murray 7-6 in one semi final to advance to the final game.  Eberle defeated Just 8-1 to meet Englot in the final.  Englot won the event with a final score of 9-4 over Eberle, claiming her second SWCT event of the season.

Curlers Corner Autumn Gold Curling Classic
Calgary, AB
October 11-14, 2013
Saskatchewan teams Amber Holland, Stefanie Lawton and Jill Shumay participated in this event.  Holland and Shumay did not qualify for playoffs, but Lawton won an A qualifier and proceeded to beat Alberta’s Heather Nedohin 6-3.  She met China’s Bingyu Wang in the semi final, losing 8-2. Lawton receives $5000 for the event.
